Ukrainian Drone Attack Hits Leningrad Region Ahead of St. Petersburg Economic Forum
Ukrainian forces launched a significant drone assault on Russia's Leningrad region hours before the start of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

In a notable escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian drones targeted Russia's Leningrad region during the night leading up to the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on June 3. The attacks came just hours before the forum's scheduled commencement, raising security concerns in the vicinity of the event.
Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported via Telegram that Russian air defense forces successfully shot down 30 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the Leningrad region. "The air defense units intercepted 30 drones over the territory of Leningrad region. Combat operations continue," he stated. However, the precise locations of the interceptions were not disclosed. The assault caused disruptions at Pulkovo Airport, leading to restrictions on arrivals and departures.
Impact on Forum Operations and Regional Security
The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is one of Russia's most prominent annual events, bringing together political leaders and business delegations from around the world. Scheduled to open its first sessions at 10:00 a.m. on June 3, SPIEF 2024 is taking place at the ExpoForum convention center, located just south of Saint Petersburg, near the Leningrad region border and Pulkovo Airport.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to deliver a keynote address on June 5. The event is also anticipated to host a German delegation, underscoring the forum's significance in fostering international economic dialogue despite current geopolitical tensions.
"The air defense units intercepted 30 drones over the territory of Leningrad region. Combat operations continue," Governor Alexander Drozdenko said.
Ukraine has not issued any official comment on the drone attack so far. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that Russian forces might escalate missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities during the night of June 3, similar to prior attacks that resulted in significant casualties.
On the Ukrainian side, their air forces recorded the presence of individual Russian drones in Ukrainian airspace on the same night, though no large-scale strikes have been reported so far. The previous night witnessed devastating attacks on Kyiv and Dnipro, leading to over 20 deaths and more than 100 injuries.
This cross-border drone activity highlights the volatile security environment surrounding the SPIEF, which aims to boost economic cooperation amidst ongoing conflict. Market participants and observers remain attentive to further developments, as regional instability could influence investor sentiment and sector rotations in energy, defense, and technology markets.
