US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Oman, stating that the United States would resort to bombings if the Sultanate interferes with ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In an interview with Fox News on August 17, Trump said, "If Oman 'gets in the way' of negotiations between Washington and Tehran over the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, the US will 'bomb the foolishness' out of them." This direct threat highlights the mounting tensions as Oman currently engages in talks with Iran to jointly manage maritime traffic through the Strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint in global oil supply, historically accounting for about one-fifth of worldwide oil shipments before the outbreak of conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran. Despite ongoing discussions, no consensus has yet been reached between Oman and Iran on control arrangements.

Negotiation Deadline Expires Amid Renewed Hostilities

On August 17, the 60-day window for US-Iran negotiations, initially set by a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Trump during the June G7 summit, officially expired. The talks aimed to resolve issues including sanctions on Iran, its nuclear program, and related tensions.

Trump remarked during the Fox News interview that Iran should "raise the white flag and surrender," signaling a hardline stance and indicating no plans to extend the negotiation deadline.

The diplomatic efforts have been overshadowed by escalating military confrontations. Prior to the expiration of the talks, Iran launched attacks on several vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in July. The US responded with a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian facilities, stating the objective was to diminish Tehran's ability to threaten commercial shipping lanes. Concurrently, Iran struck multiple sites in neighboring Gulf countries, claiming these targeted American military bases.

"If Oman interferes, we will bomb the foolishness out of them," said President Trump, emphasizing the US's readiness to use military force to secure the Strait.

Regional Calls for De-escalation and Mediation Efforts

On the same day the negotiation window closed, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Trump, urging the continuation of talks with Iran to reduce tensions in the region. Erdogan also proposed Ankara's mediation role in the conflict.

The Turkish presidential office released a statement noting that, in addition to Iran-US relations, the conversation covered issues such as the Gaza conflict, a defense pact involving Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, and bilateral relations between Turkey and the United States.

As tensions intensify around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy supply, market participants continue to monitor the geopolitical landscape closely. Any disruption to shipping could have immediate repercussions on oil prices and trading volumes across energy sectors.
