Major Drone Assault on Moscow Region Targets Infrastructure and Triggers Safety Measures

In a significant overnight incident, over 180 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were intercepted and destroyed near Moscow, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The attack involved approximately 620 drones heading towards the capital, raising concerns about regional security and prompting immediate airspace restrictions.

The drone wave occurred between the evening of August 17 and early morning August 18, with most of the drones neutralized within the Moscow region. Sobyanin announced the figure via his Telegram channel early on August 18, highlighting the scale and intensity of the attempt.

"More than 180 drones were shot down over the Moscow region overnight," Sobyanin stated.

While no specific targets were officially confirmed, reports from local observers and Telegram channels indicate that explosions were heard near Noginsk, Zheleznodorozhny, and Elektrostal. Additionally, a large number of drones were detected in the Pavlovsky Posad area, suggesting multiple target zones across the region.

Several injuries and property damages were reported due to falling drone debris. In the Ramensky district, a 10-year-old girl sustained shrapnel injuries to her hand and was hospitalized. A woman required medical assistance in the Bogorodsky district, and a 27-year-old man was injured in Kolomna. A commercial pavilion near the Globus shopping center in Kolomna caught fire after drone remnants impacted it. Furthermore, a drone struck a Wildberries warehouse located near the Atlant-Park in the Bogorodsky district.

The residential complex "Duna" in Kotelniki, situated close to the Moscow Oil Refinery, reportedly suffered damage. The refinery itself has recently been targeted multiple times by drone attacks, intensifying regional tensions.

Airspace Restrictions Implemented Amid Security Concerns

In response to the attacks, Rosaviatsia (Russian Federal Air Transport Agency) imposed temporary restrictions on the reception and departure of aircraft at major Moscow airports including Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky. Sheremetyevo airport also experienced limitations in airspace use, though flights operated on a coordinated basis with relevant authorities.

Video footage shared by the Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+ purportedly captures moments of the drone attack and air defense operations in the Moscow region, reflecting the heightened military alertness and ongoing hostilities affecting the area.

The events underscore the evolving nature of drone warfare and its impact on civilian and critical infrastructure in proximity to Moscow. Authorities remain vigilant and continue implementing defensive measures to mitigate risks from further incursions.
