Protests Erupt in Kyiv Demanding Return of Mykhailo Fedorov as Defense Minister
Hundreds rally across Ukraine calling for restoration of Mykhailo Fedorov and criticize recent government appointments.

On Sunday, August 16, large-scale protests resumed in Kyiv and multiple Ukrainian cities as hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets demanding the reinstatement of Mykhailo Fedorov as Minister of Defense. This marks the 32nd consecutive day of such protests, highlighting ongoing public dissatisfaction with recent government reshuffles.
Widespread Protests and Demands for Reform
The protestors gathered at the Freedom Arch in central Kyiv—formerly known as the Arch of Friendship of Peoples before May 2022—and proceeded with a march along key thoroughfares including Khreshchatyk Street, the Alley of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, and Olhinska Street. The demonstration culminated with a rally at Ivan Franko Square near the Ukrainian presidential office.
The protest column reportedly stretched for hundreds of meters through the city center, with participants spanning all ages but predominantly younger citizens. Slogans chanted included "Fedorov!", "Umerov is a devil!", "Veterans, not Kim!", "Speak up!", "Europe, away from the Soviet legacy!", and "Don’t interfere with Misha in the military niche!" These messages convey strong opposition to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent appointments, particularly the naming of former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to head the Foreign Intelligence Service and Vitaliy Kim, former head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, as Minister for Veterans Affairs.
Parallel protests occurred in several other Ukrainian cities including Lviv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Rivne, Poltava, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi, reflecting nationwide unrest and unified demands.
“The protestors are calling for the continuation of reforms initiated under Mykhailo Fedorov at the Ministry of Defense, and urge the government to maintain open dialogue with society,” said an organizer during the rally.
At the Kyiv demonstration, activists delivered a petition to a representative of the presidential office. The document demands the continuation of military reforms begun under Fedorov’s leadership and calls for transparent communication between the government and its citizens.
One of the protest initiators, veteran Dmytro Koziatynskyi, emphasized the unresolved issue of key ministerial vacancies, notably the positions of Defense and Foreign Affairs ministers, which remain unfilled amid ongoing conflict and security challenges.
This sustained wave of protests underscores the volatility in Ukraine’s political landscape and the public’s insistence on effective leadership in defense and governance sectors as the country navigates a critical period.
