In the early hours of June 2, Russia intensified its military campaign against Ukraine by launching a series of drone and ballistic missile strikes targeting multiple Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian Air Forces reported that Russian forces deployed Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Caspian Sea region as part of the overnight assault.

The attacks come amid heightened tensions following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent remarks describing the Ukrainian Armed Forces' strike on the occupied Luhansk region as having "given the war a new dimension." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier issued warnings of a potential large-scale Russian offensive against urban areas.

Human and Infrastructure Toll Across Multiple Cities

Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, was one of the hardest hit locations. Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv’s mayor, confirmed that four people were killed, 51 injured, and 35 hospitalized due to the missile strikes. The attacks caused electricity outages in three city districts. Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s Military City Administration, reported that debris from a downed missile struck the roof of a residential building in the Podil district, triggering a fire and shattering windows.

In the city of Dnipro, five fatalities were reported, including a 73-year-old woman, along with 25 injuries. Alexander Ganja, head of the regional military administration, noted that one strike hit a residential neighborhood, causing a fire.

Kharkiv also experienced shelling impacting two districts, with six people wounded, including an 11-year-old girl, according to Igor Terekhov, head of the local military administration.

Across Ukrainian cities, authorities continue to track missile and drone debris falling in various locations. Casualty and damage figures are being updated as more information becomes available.

"The recent attacks highlight the escalating intensity and reach of Russia’s military operations against urban centers in Ukraine," said an official Ukrainian military spokesperson.

Context of Escalation and Recent Military Developments

On June 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly referred to a Ukrainian strike on the city of Starobilsk in the annexed Luhansk region, describing it as elevating the conflict to a "new quality." According to occupation authorities, the strike partially destroyed buildings at a local college and reportedly caused the deaths of 21 students.

Earlier that day, Ukrainian President Zelensky cautioned about the likelihood of a renewed large-scale Russian offensive targeting Ukrainian cities.

The recent attacks follow a significant Russian strike on Kyiv and the surrounding region on May 24, which involved the third known use of the "Oreshnik" missile type by Russian forces. That attack resulted in two fatalities and 80 injuries.

As the conflict persists, these continuous assaults on populated areas underscore the ongoing volatility in the region and the severe impact on civilian populations and infrastructure.
