In the early hours of May 31, drone strikes targeted critical oil infrastructure in Russia's Rostov and Saratov regions, igniting fires and causing notable damage to energy facilities, local authorities reported.

Fires Sparked at Rostov Oil Storage Facility

The governor of Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, confirmed that a private enterprise's fuel storage facility in the Matveyev-Kurgan district caught fire after debris from a downed drone fell onto the site. The facility primarily serves agricultural producers. Emergency services, including a specialized firefighting train, were immediately deployed to contain the blaze.

"Residents in nearby private homes were evacuated as a precaution; no injuries have been reported," Slyusar stated on his Telegram channel. He also reported collateral damage in the settlement of Matveyev-Kurgan, including harm to an apothecary, two shops, and a vehicle, but no casualties.

Independent Ukrainian OSINT channels and local Telegram sources documented the incident, showing footage of the fire and describing an unusual phenomenon where burning fuel reportedly rained down in the area after the strike.

"After the attack on the fuel reservoir in Matveyev-Kurgan, there was an 'oil rain' as burning fuel droplets fell," a local Telegram channel cited residents.

Damage Reported at Saratov Refinery

Simultaneously, in the Saratov region, governor Roman Busargin indicated damage to civil infrastructure following drone strikes, though specifics on the extent were not immediately disclosed. OSINT investigations suggest the target was the Saratov oil refinery, a facility that has been repeatedly targeted in previous attacks.

Local social media posts and OSINT channels such as world.militares released images and videos showing fire damage at the refinery, reinforcing claims of the strike's impact on regional oil processing capabilities.

The assaults on these energy assets underscore the ongoing strategic targeting of Russia's fuel infrastructure amid escalating conflict dynamics. While no casualties have been confirmed, the attacks may affect fuel supply chains and trading volumes in affected regions.
