Colombia has declared a nationwide state of emergency after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the western region of the country, resulting in at least 132 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. The disaster, which occurred on August 10 near San José del Palmar, has led to widespread structural damage, including collapsed buildings and impaired infrastructure in cities such as Pereira, Cali, and Manizales.
President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office just three days prior, announced the emergency declaration and emphasized the immediate need to deploy all institutional resources to rescue victims trapped under debris and mitigate the disaster's impact. Over 1,500 homes suffered serious damage, with approximately 60 buildings completely collapsed. The earthquake also severely affected 18 hospitals and 52 schools, raising concerns that the death toll may rise further.
"All institutional resources will be mobilized to adequately respond to the catastrophe. Our primary focus is to save people trapped under rubble," stated President de la Espriella.
Aftershocks and Regional Assistance
According to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 103 kilometers deep near San José del Palmar. Multiple aftershocks continue to pose risks, marking this as the strongest seismic event recorded in Colombia in the 21st century.
In response, the U.S. Department of State announced an emergency aid package of $15.5 million to support Colombia’s disaster relief efforts. The U.S. government expressed solidarity with the Colombian people and support for President de la Espriella’s administration during this critical period.
