Belgorod Restores Mobile Internet and Street Lighting Amid Regional Security Challenges
Acting governor orders resumption of mobile internet and street lighting in Belgorod following security and infrastructure assessments.
Belgorod authorities have reinstated mobile internet services and street lighting in the city after months of intermittent disruptions linked to ongoing security concerns in the region. The move comes amid heightened tensions and repeated missile attacks in the border area.
Resumption of Services Following Security Review
Acting Governor Alexander Shuvaev issued an order on May 30 to resume stable mobile internet service and restore the city’s street lighting. These measures were taken after a thorough analysis of the security situation and infrastructure status during a regional operations headquarters meeting.
Shuvaev emphasized that restoring these services responds to residents’ requests and reflects a strategic decision to balance public safety with normalcy. However, the governor underscored that in other localities within Belgorod Oblast, decisions regarding internet and lighting will be made by local authorities based on evolving operational conditions.
"In light of defensive measures taken to reduce risks to the population, we have opted to lift certain restrictions, but we remain ready to reinstate them should threat levels escalate," Shuvaev stated.
Since October 2023, periodic shutdowns of street lighting in Belgorod had been implemented primarily to reduce load on the regional power grid, facilitating quicker restoration after missile strikes. The previous governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, had also addressed concerns about partial mobile internet blackouts, acknowledging the trade-off between security and communication.
Impact of Ongoing Conflict on Infrastructure
Belgorod Oblast, located near the Ukrainian border, has faced recurrent military strikes. On the night of May 25 alone, the region endured two large-scale missile attacks, resulting in damage to energy infrastructure and disruptions to electricity and water supplies.
The regional operations headquarters reported one injury and damage to administrative buildings, private residences, and several vehicles. These events highlight the fragility of critical infrastructure in the conflict zone and the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining essential services.
