US Department of State Approves $373.6M Sale of JDAM-ER Kits to Ukraine to Enhance Airstrike Precision

The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential $373.6 million sale of Joint Direct Attack Munition - Extended Range (JDAM-ER) kits to Ukraine, designed to significantly increase the range and precision of air-dropped bombs, according to an official announcement on May 5.

JDAM-ER kits are aerodynamic tail assemblies that attach to existing bombs, extending their operational range by approximately 70 to 80 kilometers. This enhancement allows for stand-off precision strikes, potentially reducing the risk to delivery aircraft by enabling them to launch munitions from greater distances.

Details of the Proposed Sale and Operational Challenges

Ukraine has formally requested 1,532 JDAM-ER kits, including necessary maintenance equipment, spare and repair parts, software, repair and maintenance services, and logistics support. Boeing, the American aerospace giant, is slated to be the prime contractor responsible for fulfilling the order.

Despite the approval, experts note that this does not guarantee immediate delivery. The process involves signing final contracts and manufacturing the systems before they can be shipped to Ukraine.

Earlier in 2023, the U.S. supplied Ukraine with initial batches of JDAM-ER kits under a $1.85 billion aid package approved during the first year of Russia’s full-scale invasion. However, reports from NBC News indicate that some of these kits malfunctioned in spring 2023, possibly due to incorrectly installed fuzes.

Additionally, Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems have posed a significant challenge by jamming GPS signals that JDAM-ER munitions rely on for guidance, complicating their operational effectiveness on the battlefield.
