US-China Talks Reveal Beijing's Firm Stance on Jimmy Lai's Imprisonment
Donald Trump reports no optimism following discussion with Xi Jinping about Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai’s 20-year sentence.

During recent high-level discussions in Beijing, former US President Donald Trump addressed the contentious case of Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai, who received a 20-year prison sentence from Chinese authorities. Lai was convicted on charges including "incitement to subversion" and "collusion with foreign forces" amid his support for the 2019 pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
Beijing Maintains Hardline on High-Profile Case
Trump revealed that he raised Lai's situation in his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping but encountered a firm and unyielding stance. "I really brought up the issue," Trump said aboard the presidential plane departing China. "He said the situation with Jimmy Lai is complicated for him. The reaction was not very positive." In a subsequent interview with Fox News, Trump expanded on the lack of optimism following the conversation.
"I did not feel optimistic," Trump said, highlighting Beijing's reluctance to reconsider Lai's sentence.
Jimmy Lai, 78, a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s media landscape, was a vocal supporter of the city’s mass pro-democracy demonstrations in 2019. Since his arrest, Lai has spent nearly 2,000 days in solitary confinement. The multi-year legal process concluded in 2026 with a harsh sentence that Beijing justifies by labeling him as harboring "fierce hatred" towards the Chinese Communist Party.
Lai has consistently denied all charges against him. In recognition of his stance and struggle, the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle awarded Lai its "Freedom of Speech" prize in April 2026. Barbara Massing, DW’s director general, praised Lai’s "invaluable commitment to democratic values."
The case continues to symbolize the broader tensions between Hong Kong’s pro-democracy forces and Beijing’s tightening grip, underscoring ongoing geopolitical and market concerns linked to China’s governance and rule of law.
