Ukraine Reports Striking Four Russian Navy Ships in Novorossiysk Attack
Ukrainian military sources claim damage to key Russian naval vessels and infrastructure in strategic Black Sea port of Novorossiysk
On August 12, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported a successful strike overnight against Russian military vessels and strategic facilities in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, four Russian Navy ships were damaged to varying degrees during the attack, including two missile-armed frigates.
Details of the Naval Strike and Targeted Infrastructure
The affected vessels identified by Ukrainian sources include the frigates Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov—both equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles—which have been used by the Russian Navy to launch strikes on Ukrainian territory. Additionally, the small missile ship Buyan-M and patrol ship Vasily Bykov were reportedly hit.
The SBU also disclosed that several other critical targets were impacted during the operation, including a radar station forming part of a S-300 air defense system, the Grushovaya oil depot, a mobile fire team, and infrastructure linked to three port berths. The Ukrainian side attributed the precision of the attack to a combination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including the Palianytsia reactive drones, Neptune cruise missiles, and maritime strike systems.
"Ukrainian drones, reactive 'Palianytsia' drones, Neptune missiles, and sea-based strike systems accurately targeted these critical objectives," stated the SBU.
Notably, the official statement from the Ukrainian security service did not mention damage to the Buyan-M missile ship despite initial references by the General Staff.
Russian civilian infrastructure also sustained damage. Reports from Russian media outlets indicate that the Novorossiysk grain terminal and the Novorossiysk Bread Products Plant (PJSC NKHP) were hit and ceased operations following the attack. The grain terminal managed by PJSC NKHP reportedly sustained damage as well.
Veniamin Kondratiev, Governor of Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, announced that three people were killed and 24 injured due to the nighttime strikes. Approximately 60 residential buildings in Novorossiysk were damaged, with debris from unmanned aerial vehicles also impacting houses in the nearby cities of Gelendzhik, Anapa, and the Temryuk district. Local authorities estimated that "hundreds" of drones were launched across the region.
This strike follows previous attacks on regional energy infrastructure; notably, the Grushovaya oil depot, which connects via pipelines to the Sheskharis oil terminal used for loading tankers, was reported to have caught fire on June 8. This terminal serves as a critical endpoint for Transneft’s main oil pipelines in the Krasnodar area, highlighting the strategic importance of the region’s energy logistics.

The reported damage to Russian naval assets equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles reduces Moscow’s offensive missile capabilities in the Black Sea region, potentially impacting Russia’s operational reach. Furthermore, the disruption to grain export facilities in Novorossiysk may affect global grain supply chains, given the port’s role as a key export hub.
