Serbia to Hold Early Parliamentary Elections in October Amid Political Unrest
President Aleksandar Vučić announces snap parliamentary elections for October 2023, over a year ahead of schedule.

Serbia will hold early parliamentary elections in October 2023, President Aleksandar Vučić announced on August 20 during a broadcast on RTS television. The vote is scheduled for either October 18 or 25, significantly earlier than the originally planned timeline.
Political Context and Public Unrest
Vučić, who has held power in Serbia for 12 years, indicated that the official election date will be confirmed within days. His current presidential term is set to expire in mid-2027, but he had previously expressed intentions to leave office early. Under Serbia's constitution, a president can serve no more than two terms, which limits Vučić's tenure moving forward.
The announcement comes amid ongoing nationwide protests that have persisted for over a year. These demonstrations were sparked by a tragic accident in Novi Sad when a railway station canopy collapsed, killing 16 people. The incident has become a catalyst for broader public outrage.
"Approximately 80% of Serbians support the anti-corruption demands of student protesters, and about 64% back the ongoing demonstrations," according to recent polls.
Protesters accuse President Vučić and his government of widespread corruption, connections with organized crime, violent repression of political opponents, and suppression of free speech. These allegations have mobilized large-scale protests, with tens to hundreds of thousands of demonstrators regularly taking to the streets.
One of the protesters' primary demands has been the call for early elections, a demand now being addressed by the government’s decision to hold snap parliamentary elections. The political developments are closely watched by investors and market participants for potential impacts on Serbia's economic stability and regional market dynamics.
