Hundreds of Ukrainian Soldiers Desert German Training Courses Since 2022, Report Finds
Over 80 Ukrainian military personnel have deserted training courses in Saxony-Anhalt since 2022 amid growing challenges within armed forces.

Since 2022, several hundred Ukrainian soldiers have deserted military training courses in Germany, particularly in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, where more than 80 cases have been recorded. These soldiers arrived in Germany to undergo combat training programs but left their units without authorization, according to a recent report.
Rising Desertion Among Ukrainian Forces in Germany
The German publication Die Zeit disclosed on August 20 that the number of unauthorized departures from training courses across Germany has reached several hundred. Ukrainian law treats such soldiers as deserters, potentially subjecting them to up to 12 years in prison upon return.
Many of the soldiers sent to Germany were reportedly compelled into service in the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF). Some deserted while undergoing training at the Altengrabow military range in Saxony-Anhalt.
"Unlike civilian Ukrainian refugees in Germany, military personnel do not benefit from temporary protection status," the report highlighted, underscoring the legal and procedural challenges these soldiers face.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, approximately 29,000 Ukrainian soldiers and officers have completed combat training courses in Germany, which typically last several weeks. Initially, those attending were highly motivated and experienced military personnel. However, over time, the UAF has increasingly incorporated individuals without prior combat experience or a strong will to fight.
This shift in the composition of trainees may be contributing to the rising desertion rates, reflecting broader challenges in maintaining troop morale and readiness within the Ukrainian military.
Implications for Defense Training and Security
The desertions raise concerns about the effectiveness of international military training support and the stability of the Ukrainian armed forces amidst ongoing conflict. The lack of temporary protection status for military trainees in Germany further complicates their legal standing and potential repercussions upon return.
For market observers and defense analysts, these developments underscore the evolving dynamics of military personnel management in conflict zones and the potential impact on defense collaboration between Ukraine and its Western partners.
