In the early hours of August 20, Russian forces launched a ballistic missile strike targeting Kyiv, resulting in at least five confirmed deaths and injuring 23 individuals, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration. The assault caused severe destruction to residential buildings and critical infrastructure across several districts of the Ukrainian capital.
Details of the Attack and Immediate Impact
Vitaliy Klitschko, Kyiv's mayor, initially reported three fatalities and 20 wounded persons, with 14 requiring hospitalization while the remainder received outpatient or on-site medical assistance. The missile debris fell near a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district, shattering windows and sparking fires.
"The strike also severely damaged a nine-story residential building, with its upper floors destroyed," Mayor Klitschko stated on his Telegram channel.
Additional reports confirm that at another location within the same district, individuals remain trapped in a shelter, highlighting the ongoing rescue challenges. A nearby children’s hospital sustained damage, with vehicles parked on the premises catching fire.
Further fires broke out in non-residential facilities in the Darnytskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. Ukrainian Telegram channels have also reported missile impacts on warehouse facilities in Brovary, a Kyiv oblast town, underscoring the attack's wide geographic reach.
