In the early hours of June 23, Russian military forces conducted missile strikes targeting the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, causing injuries to civilians and significant damage to infrastructure. Local authorities reported the attack damaged private homes, outbuildings, and a gas station, with multiple fires ignited and later extinguished by emergency services.

Details of the Overnight Attacks

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, confirmed that two residents, a 73-year-old man and woman, sought medical assistance following the strikes. Additional casualty details remain under investigation. The exact type of munitions used in the strike has not been disclosed, although prior warnings had been issued regarding the potential use of guided aerial bombs by Russian forces.

Simultaneously, in the city of Kharkiv, two missiles struck the Slobidskyi district, situated in the southeastern sector of the city. Mayor Ihor Terekhov subsequently clarified that the strike occurred on the outskirts rather than the city center. He also reported the movement of a group of Russian strike drones toward the city. Later, a Russian-launched “Molniya” drone reportedly impacted the Kyivskyi district in northeastern Kharkiv. Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of damage and casualties from these attacks.

“Several residential structures were set ablaze during the Zaporizhzhia strike, but emergency responders managed to extinguish the fires quickly,” Ivan Fedorov said.

Context Amid Rising Civilian Casualties

The attacks come shortly after an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting convened at Ukraine's request, following a series of intense Russian strikes across the country on June 15, which notably damaged the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex.

Mohammed Khaled Khiari, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific, highlighted that May 2024 witnessed the highest number of civilian casualties in Ukraine since April 2022. UN Human Rights Office data indicates that at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 injured in May alone.

The renewed wave of attacks underscores the ongoing volatility and humanitarian risks in the region, with continued strikes on urban centers impacting civilian populations and critical infrastructure.
