Following the announcement of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from May 9 to May 11, both sides have utilized the temporary pause in active combat to rotate troops and prepare for potential future engagements. The truce, proposed and announced by then-US President Donald Trump, was intended to facilitate a halt in hostilities and enable a prisoner exchange. However, military activities and strategic positioning have continued behind the scenes.

Troop Rotations and Strategic Preparations During Ceasefire

Ukrainian Armed Forces spokesperson Viktor Tregubov confirmed on May 9 during a televised marathon that Russian forces have significantly reduced active fire but are actively using the ceasefire period to reorganize and reinforce their offensive capabilities. "They have indeed quieted down today. They are taking a pause to use this time for troop rotations, resupply, and to renew their offensive potential," Tregubov stated.

At the same time, Ukrainian forces are also leveraging the truce to enhance their logistics and rotate personnel to maintain readiness. This mutual repositioning suggests both militaries are preparing for continued conflict despite the temporary lull in direct engagements.

The ceasefire was declared by Donald Trump on the evening of May 8, who claimed it was an initiative he proposed. The agreement was supposed to not only halt fighting but also facilitate the exchange of prisoners on a 1000-for-1000 basis.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed skepticism regarding the prisoner swap, accusing Ukrainian authorities of being unwilling to proceed. Putin noted that Moscow had submitted a list containing 500 Ukrainian military personnel for exchange on May 5, but Kyiv had responded they were not ready to carry out the exchange.

Meanwhile, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, stated on May 9 that prisoner lists were still being compiled. He clarified that the process requires identifying actual individuals, negotiating terms, and only then beginning the physical exchange. Ushakov also indicated that Russia plans to resume full-scale military operations against Ukraine after May 11.

Continuing Hostilities Despite Ceasefire

Though combat intensity decreased during the ceasefire, clashes and attacks have not fully ceased. The Russian Ministry of Defense accused Ukrainian forces of launching drone attacks and attempting assaults on Russian positions in occupied Ukrainian territories.

Conversely, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that between midnight and 22:00 on May 9, Russian troops conducted 121 attacks on Ukrainian positions. These incidents included shelling of border areas in Sumy region, affecting settlements such as Rogoznoe, Volfino, Korenek, Atinskoe, Ulanovo, and Kucherovka.

Ukrainian sources also asserted that Russian forces continued attacks on May 8 despite the Kremlin's unilateral ceasefire declaration.

This pattern underscores the fragile and contested nature of the ceasefire, with both sides maneuvering tactically while officially observing a temporary halt in open hostilities.
