Recent attacks by two rebel groups in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have resulted in the deaths of at least 69 people, including 19 combatants, authorities confirmed. The violent incidents, which took place in late April, highlight the persistent instability in this mineral-rich northeastern region.

Details of the Clashes and Actors Involved

The assaults involved the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CRP) and the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO). The CRP targeted a unit of the DRC’s national army, the FARDC, and is linked to the Hema ethnic group. In retaliation, CODECO, which claims to represent the Lendu ethnic group opposed to the Hema, attacked several villages.

"The search for bodies was delayed due to the ongoing presence of CODECO fighters in the area," said security sources.

Security officials have confirmed the casualty figures but noted that continued rebel activity is hampering recovery and stabilization efforts in the region.

Context of Conflict in Ituri

Ituri province is a hotspot for armed conflict fueled by competition over valuable natural resources, including gold deposits. CODECO, once an agricultural cooperative, has evolved into a formidable armed group with thousands of fighters and is considered among the most violent in the region.

The CRP was founded by Thomas Lubanga, a former militia leader and the first person convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes. After serving a 14-year sentence, Lubanga was released in 2020 and has since pursued a political career in Ituri. In 2025, he announced the formation of the new armed group citing government inaction against CODECO and Ugandan rebel violence.

Broader Regional Instability

The conflict in Ituri is part of a broader pattern of unrest in eastern DRC, where the March 23 Movement (M23), predominantly composed of the Tutsi minority and backed by Rwanda, controls significant territory including the city of Goma. This ongoing violence has contributed to DRC’s status as one of Africa’s most conflict-ridden countries, with more than 7 million internally displaced persons.

The persistence of such conflicts underscores the fragility of security and governance in the region, complicating efforts to stabilize markets and economic activities dependent on resource extraction.
