Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds resigned after an incident involving drones that violated Latvia’s airspace. The drones, allegedly Ukrainian, diverted from their intended route and entered Latvian territory, intensifying security worries in the Baltic region.

Drone Incursion Triggers Political Fallout

The incident occurred on the night of May 7, when two unmanned aerial vehicles were detected entering Latvia’s airspace from the Russian border. One of the drones crashed on the grounds of a petroleum refinery in the city of Rēzekne. Latvian authorities are conducting ongoing investigations into the events.

Minister Spruds publicly stated that the drones were likely launched by Ukraine, targeting locations inside Russia. Emphasizing Ukraine’s right to self-defense amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, Spruds remarked that "unauthorized drones must not pose a threat to public safety." He added that his resignation was intended to protect the Latvian military from becoming entangled in political disputes.

Earlier, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina withdrew her confidence in Spruds and demanded his resignation, citing failures in safeguarding national airspace. She criticized the military leadership’s inability to uphold commitments to maintain secure skies following the drone incursions.

Ukraine has been engaged in a protracted defense effort against Russia’s full-scale invasion, frequently targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure with drone attacks. Similar drone violations have been reported in neighboring Baltic states and Finland, underscoring growing security challenges along NATO’s eastern flank.

In response to these incidents, Estonia’s Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur called on Ukraine to exercise greater control over its drone operations to prevent unintended cross-border violations.

"Unauthorized drones must not threaten the safety of people," emphasized former Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds amid his resignation.

The drone incursion and subsequent political shake-up serve to highlight the complexities of managing security in a region affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The incident has sparked debates on airspace control efficacy and the risks posed by increasingly sophisticated unmanned aerial systems operating near national borders.

Market observers will be monitoring how these developments influence regional defense spending, security policies, and geopolitical risk assessments, especially in sectors linked to defense, energy, and infrastructure.
