German and US Foreign Ministers Meet in Washington Amid Global Economic and Security Discussions
Johann Wadephul and Marco Rubio emphasize indispensable transatlantic partnership amid multiple crises and upcoming NATO summit preparations.

On June 29, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington to discuss pressing global economic and security challenges. Wadephul underscored the critical nature of the US-Germany partnership during a period of deep international shifts.
Strengthening Transatlantic Ties Amid Crises
Following their discussions, Wadephul stated that numerous ongoing global crises are undermining economic stability and threatening to create divisions even among close allies. "But we are resolutely opposing this," he said, emphasizing the indispensable nature of the German-American partnership at this transformative time.
"Our partnership with the US is indispensable—especially in a period of profound change," Wadephul remarked.
The meeting also addressed upcoming diplomatic efforts, including the planned resumption of talks between Washington and Tehran aimed at maintaining a ceasefire agreement. Wadephul confirmed that representatives from both sides, who had previously accused each other of violations, are scheduled to meet on June 30 in Doha to seek continued peace.
In anticipation of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara, Wadephul expressed his intent to discuss with Rubio the reallocation of military and financial contributions among NATO member states as well as the long-term support framework for Ukraine.
Broader Diplomatic Engagements in Latin America
After his meeting in Washington, Wadephul planned to attend the Mercosur summit in Asunción, Paraguay, on June 30. Mercosur is a major South American trade bloc, and the summit will gather member countries to discuss economic cooperation and integration. Following this, the minister is scheduled to visit Argentina and Brazil until July 3, strengthening Germany's diplomatic and economic ties in the region.
Adding a human touch to his busy itinerary, Wadephul expressed confidence in Germany's national football team ahead of their Round of 16 World Cup match against Paraguay on June 29, predicting a 3-1 win for Germany.
This series of high-level meetings highlights Germany's strategic diplomatic efforts to reinforce alliances and address global economic and security uncertainties while maintaining active engagement in Latin America’s evolving trade landscape.
