On June 26, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced targeted strikes against Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites in response to an Iranian drone attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely was hit by a kamikaze drone on June 25 while sailing near Omani waters.

CENTCOM described the US airstrikes as a decisive retaliation against "an unprovoked attack clearly violating the ceasefire agreement". The strikes took place shortly after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched rocket fire targeting US military bases in the Middle East. The IRGC warned that any further US aggression would trigger a "more extensive response."

"The US, through various provocations, has tried to undermine Iran's legitimate control over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, to which we responded accordingly," the IRGC stated, asserting Iran has not violated any agreements.

Market Impact and Geopolitical Context

The attack on Ever Lovely marks the first hostile incident in the Strait of Hormuz since a June 17 framework agreement between the US and Iran to cease hostilities and unblock this critical waterway. However, just hours before the attack, the IRGC declared that safe passage would only be guaranteed through routes under Iranian control, intensifying regional tensions.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), under the UN, suspended operations to evacuate hundreds of vessels and over 11,000 sailors stranded in the Persian Gulf amid escalating hostilities between the US, Israel, and Iran. This disruption in one of the world's most vital oil transit corridors triggered a rise in global oil prices, reflecting mounting market uncertainty.

US President Donald Trump condemned Iran's actions as "stupid violations" of the ceasefire on June 26, highlighting that Iran deployed at least four drones against ships in the Strait. This escalation underscores the fragility of recent diplomatic efforts and the potential for further market volatility tied to geopolitical flashpoints in energy transit routes.
