UK Politician Anne Widdecombe Killed; Suspect Arrested in Non-Political Murder
Right-wing Reform UK politician Anne Widdecombe was found dead, with police arresting a suspect but ruling out political motives.

British police have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of killing Anne Widdecombe, a prominent right-wing politician and member of Reform UK. The 78-year-old former Conservative MP's body was discovered on July 9 at her home near Dartmoor National Park in southwest England, with the authorities announcing the incident on July 10 following the arrest.
Investigation and Political Context
Matt Longman, Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, confirmed the woman had sustained serious injuries. While the suspect, described as a white British male, was apprehended in Newton Abbot, police have stated that the killing is not being treated as a terrorist attack or politically motivated crime. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anne Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP in the House of Commons from 1987 until 2010. She was known for her conservative stances, particularly opposing abortion rights and the expansion of LGBTQ+ rights. Widdecombe was also a vocal advocate for reinstating the death penalty in the UK, while opposing euthanasia legalization.
Between 1990 and 1997, Widdecombe held several junior ministerial roles under Prime Minister John Major, including positions related to social security, employment, and home affairs. After leaving Parliament, she gained public attention through appearances on British reality shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
She later joined the Brexit Party in the European Parliament, led by right-wing populist Nigel Farage. Since 2023, Widdecombe was the spokesperson for Reform UK, a party founded by Farage that is noted for its hardline anti-immigration rhetoric.
"This is truly shocking news, and my thoughts are with Anne Widdecombe's family and friends during this terrible time," said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Starmer emphasized Widdecombe's long-standing political career with many achievements and called her death a huge loss. He stressed that the safety of lawmakers remains a top priority and appealed for unity beyond political differences.
Nigel Farage expressed deep shock over Widdecombe's death, lamenting the increased risks faced by public figures. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also paid tribute, describing her as a "heroic Brexit advocate" and a compelling speaker who inspired Conservative audiences.
