Trump Considers Putin’s Potential G20 Attendance Beneficial Amid Uncertainty of Russia’s Invitation
US President Donald Trump views Vladimir Putin’s possible presence at the 2026 Miami G20 summit as beneficial but is unsure about Russia’s official invitation.

US President Donald Trump has publicly stated that the attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming G20 summit in Miami in December 2026 would be "beneficial." However, Trump also conveyed uncertainty regarding whether Russia has officially been invited to the event.
On Thursday, April 23, Trump remarked that while he believes Putin's presence would be helpful, he does not have confirmation about Russia’s invitation and expressed doubts about Putin’s likelihood of attending. This statement comes amid ongoing international tensions and Russia’s diplomatic isolation following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier that day, reports emerged indicating that Trump intended to invite Putin to the G20 summit. According to these reports, the US president is looking to continue efforts aimed at mitigating Russia’s global isolation, which deepened following Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine.
Russia’s Response and Diplomatic Ambiguity
In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that no final decision regarding Putin’s participation in the Miami summit has been made. Similarly, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin, cited by Russian news agency RIA Novosti, confirmed that Russia had received an "invitation to participate at the highest level." However, he added, "We will see closer to the date. God knows what will happen before then." This highlights the uncertainty surrounding Russia's engagement in the G20 forum amid complex geopolitical dynamics.
In addition to Putin, Trump has reportedly invited leaders from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to the summit, signaling a broader diplomatic outreach to Central Asian countries.
"It would be useful if Putin comes to the G20 summit, but I don’t know if Russia has been invited and I doubt he will come," Trump stated.
The G20 summit scheduled for Miami represents a critical platform for global economic dialogue and geopolitical negotiation. The potential participation of Russia’s leader could impact discussions on sanctions, trade, and international security issues, especially in the context of ongoing global market uncertainties and sector rotations influenced by geopolitical events.
