Trump Aims to Meet North Korea's Kim in November at APEC Summit to Revive Nuclear Talks
US President Donald Trump plans to resume negotiations on North Korea's nuclear program during the APEC summit in Shenzhen this November.

US President Donald Trump is seeking a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this fall to restart talks on Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, according to multiple US officials. The proposed face-to-face encounter could take place in November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China.
While official preparations for the meeting have not yet begun, the prospect of renewed high-level diplomacy comes amid ongoing concerns about North Korea's expanding nuclear arsenal. Trump's initiative reflects a continued effort to engage North Korea diplomatically after previous summits failed to achieve denuclearization commitments.
Background and Strategic Context
Trump and Kim have met three times during the former president's tenure, with talks breaking down over disagreements on dismantling North Korea's nuclear infrastructure. Since those meetings, experts note that the North Korean nuclear arsenal has grown significantly.
"Judging by the hundreds of missile launchers demonstrated and the increasing annual production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, North Korea's arsenal likely consists of several hundred nuclear warheads," said Jeffrey Lewis, a specialist on Pyongyang's nuclear program from Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation.
In previous attempts, including a 2025 Asia tour, Trump expressed a desire to meet Kim again. North Korea signaled willingness, but logistical challenges prevented a timely summit. Trump later noted that such a meeting could overshadow his planned engagement with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea.
Alongside these diplomatic overtures, Trump has also announced a reduction in the scale of US-South Korea military exercises and extended an offer of peace to the North Korean leader, signaling a strategic shift toward de-escalation on the Korean Peninsula.
Market participants will be closely monitoring developments ahead of the APEC summit, as renewed US-North Korea dialogue could influence geopolitical risk sentiment and affect regional market dynamics, particularly in Asia.
