In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of drone flights detected near Bundeswehr military sites in Germany. Military officials report that hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been observed in close proximity to sensitive army installations.

The rise in drone activity follows the escalation of the full-scale conflict initiated by Russia in Ukraine. Since then, German armed forces have recorded a sharp uptick in drone encounters near military objects, according to a representative of the Bundeswehr's Operational Command.

Hybrid Threat Environment and Security Challenges

"In total, over the past few years, there have been reports of several hundred suspected drone overflights of Bundeswehr facilities," the official said. While most incidents have involved individual drones, there have been occasions when entire swarms were detected.

The security landscape across Germany and Europe has undergone fundamental changes amid growing hybrid threats. These include disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, espionage, and sabotage activities, which have become daily challenges for national security.

One recent incident involved the detection of two UAVs over a critical military base in the town of Mechernich, located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Local police have launched an investigation into the event.

Another notable case occurred at Leipzig Airport on the night of August 5, when a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator collided with a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. Although the explosive device did not detonate for unknown reasons, the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany has opened an investigation into the incident.

In response to these emerging threats, Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt announced the establishment of a new technology center at the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) testing airfield in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. This center will focus on researching, developing, and testing counter-drone technologies to enhance protection against UAV incursions.

The development underscores the increasing priority given to drone threat mitigation in Germany’s defense strategy, reflecting the broader trend of adapting to complex and hybrid security challenges in Europe.
