On the night of May 6, Ukraine implemented a unilateral ceasefire initiative proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky as an alternative to Russia’s narrowly defined truce scheduled only for May 8-9. However, the Russian Armed Forces continued offensive operations against Ukrainian territories despite the offer.

Continued Russian Attacks Across Ukrainian Regions

The night of May 6 saw renewed Russian strikes targeting key regions. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a significant industrial facility was attacked, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the local military administration. Ukrainian Air Force reports confirmed the use of cruise air bombs in this assault.

Additionally, cruise missile launches were detected in the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Donetsk regions during the same night. Russian drones were also observed operating over Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, indicating sustained tactical engagements by Russian forces despite the ceasefire plea.

"We consider human life to be of immeasurably greater value than the celebration of any anniversary," stated Ukrainian President Zelensky in response to Russia’s conditional ceasefire offer.

The Ukrainian government has not yet issued official comments regarding the latest Russian strikes. Previously, Zelensky warned that any violations would prompt a mirrored response from Kyiv.

Context of the Ceasefire Proposals and Recent Hostilities

Earlier in the week, Russian authorities announced a unilateral truce declared by President Vladimir Putin for Victory Day celebrations on May 8 and 9. The Russian Defense Ministry explicitly warned that any Ukrainian attempts to disrupt these commemorations would trigger a massive retaliatory missile strike on central Kyiv.

In response, President Zelensky expressed willingness for an earlier ceasefire beginning midnight May 6, contingent upon Russia reciprocating the cessation of hostilities. Ukrainian officials emphasized prioritizing human life over symbolic dates.

Kirill Budanov, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, confirmed Kyiv’s readiness to continue the ceasefire if Russia refrained from further attacks.

Underlying this exchange, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov revealed that Putin’s idea to pause fighting during the Victory Day period was initially discussed with then-U.S. President Donald Trump. Ukraine also received official notifications about Russia’s intent to halt fire for the holiday.

Nonetheless, May 5 witnessed intensified Russian missile strikes in Ukrainian cities including Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kramatorsk, causing over 20 casualties.

In a related development, Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed head of annexed Crimea, reported fatalities from a Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Dzhankoi, citing five civilian deaths. This report followed the attack on the evening of May 5, though Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the incident.
