Multiple drone strikes cause casualties and fires across Kyiv

In the early hours of May 24, Russian forces launched a heavy assault targeting Kyiv and its surrounding regions, according to local officials. The attacks primarily involved drones striking residential buildings, resulting in at least one confirmed death and over 20 injuries. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 13 individuals were hospitalized, with three in critical condition.

The strikes hit multiple districts: in Shevchenkivskyi, a drone struck a nine-story residential building causing a fatality; in Obolonskyi, a high-rise was hit between the 12th and 13th floors; and in Solomianskyi, a drone caused damage to a 24-story building around the 20th floor. Videos circulating on social media display large fires, particularly in the Solomianskyi district.

Debris from drones and missiles fell in various Kyiv neighborhoods and suburbs, igniting additional fires. The mayor confirmed that the assault was extensive and had a significant impact on civilian infrastructure.

Potential use of "Oreshnik" ballistic missile marks escalation

Separately, open-source intelligence and social media footage suggest that Russia deployed the medium-range ballistic missile "Oreshnik" against an unidentified target in Bila Tserkva, south of Kyiv. Ukrainian and Russian official sources have yet to confirm this missile's use, but videos show the characteristic separation of warheads and large explosions associated with the "Oreshnik" missile system.

"If confirmed, this would be the third recorded deployment of the 'Oreshnik' missile by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion," experts note.

The "Oreshnik" missile was previously used in attacks on Ukraine in November 2024 and January 2026. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the November strike as a test of the missile. The missile's January launch targeted an object in Lviv Oblast, reportedly justified by Russia as retaliatory action following an alleged attempted drone attack on Putin's residence. This claim faced skepticism internationally, including from U.S. officials.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on May 23 of Russia preparing to deploy the "Oreshnik" missile again, urging international partners to respond proactively rather than reactively to Russia’s escalating military tactics. He emphasized the need for increased pressure on Moscow to prevent further prolongation of the conflict.
