Russia Launches Major Missile and Drone Strike on Kyiv Amid Widespread Fires and Casualties
Massive Russian attacks hit Kyiv and multiple Ukrainian cities, causing significant damage, fires, and casualties during overnight assault.

In the early hours of May 14, Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone strike targeting Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. Explosions rocked the city, triggering widespread fires and causing severe damage to residential and commercial buildings. Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency teams work to save trapped residents amidst the rubble of a partially collapsed high-rise in the Darnytskyi district.
Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed at least 16 people were injured during the attack, with one fatality reported. Nine casualties were hospitalized, while two others received outpatient treatment. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that 10 people have already been rescued from beneath the debris, with search and rescue efforts continuing.
Extensive Damage Across Kyiv’s Districts
The assault caused destruction in several parts of Kyiv beyond Darnytskyi. In the Dniprovskyi district, debris from a downed drone ignited a fire on the roof of a five-story residential building, and a private home was also struck. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, drone fragments hit a 12th-floor apartment in the northern part of the city, sparking another fire.
Non-residential buildings were damaged in the Shevchenkivskyi, Solomianskyi, and Obolonskyi districts. In western Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, a car fire broke out in a business center parking lot. Additionally, small architectural structures and a gas station caught fire in the Darnytskyi district. On Kyiv’s southern side, debris struck both a business center and the roadway in the Holosiivskyi district, further illustrating the scope of the attack.
“The situation remains critical as emergency services continue to work tirelessly to rescue those trapped and extinguish fires caused by this large-scale assault,” said a Kyiv city official.
Ukrainian Air Force reports indicated that the Russian military launched missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs not only at Kyiv but also targeted key regions across Ukraine, including Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, Donetsk, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy Oblasts.
On May 13 alone, the Russian army deployed 892 drones against Ukraine, with 710 intercepted by Ukraine’s air defense systems. Notably, the city of Uzhhorod in Zakarpattia Oblast was hit by explosions—the first time the war reached this western administrative center.
This latest wave of attacks underscores the ongoing intensity and geographic expansion of the conflict, as Russian forces continue to deploy a combination of missile and drone strikes to inflict widespread disruption and devastation across Ukraine’s urban centers.
