Russian border authorities have indefinitely closed the Azov-Don Canal, a vital shipping route linking the Don River to the Sea of Azov, following a series of drone attacks on vessels in the region. According to multiple sources, the Russian Border Service, operating under the Federal Security Service (FSB), notified shipping companies that vessel passage through the canal is suspended with no specified timeline for resumption. This development follows extensive Ukrainian drone strikes targeting ships in the Azov Sea, which have reportedly damaged at least 25 vessels, including oil tankers and dry cargo ships.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ unmanned aerial systems commander, Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, disclosed a list of affected vessels on July 9, highlighting that many attacked tankers belong to Russia’s so-called "shadow fleet" and are subject to international sanctions related to the ongoing conflict. Some vessels were reportedly targeted multiple times.

In addition to the canal closure, passage through the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, has also reportedly been suspended, though Russian authorities have not publicly clarified the reasons behind these restrictions.
