Russia Halts Shipping Through Azov-Don Canal Following Ukrainian Drone Attacks
Russian authorities suspended vessel passage on key Azov-Don waterway after drone strikes on ships in the Azov Sea.

Russian border authorities have indefinitely closed the Azov-Don Canal, a vital shipping route linking the Don River to the Sea of Azov, following a series of drone attacks on vessels in the region. The move disrupts maritime traffic and raises concerns over the impact on grain exports and regional commodity flows.
Closure of Strategic Waterway Amid Escalating Drone Strikes
According to multiple sources, the Russian Border Service, operating under the Federal Security Service (FSB), notified shipping companies that vessel passage through the canal is suspended with no specified timeline for resumption. This development follows extensive Ukrainian drone strikes targeting ships in the Azov Sea, which have reportedly damaged at least 25 vessels, including oil tankers and dry cargo ships.
"The Azov-Don Canal closure marks a significant disruption in a key trade artery connecting Russia’s grain production regions to international markets," said an industry analyst.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ unmanned aerial systems commander, Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, disclosed a list of affected vessels on July 9, highlighting that many attacked tankers belong to Russia’s so-called "shadow fleet" and are subject to international sanctions related to the ongoing conflict. Some vessels were reportedly targeted multiple times.
In addition to the canal closure, passage through the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, has also reportedly been suspended, though Russian authorities have not publicly clarified the reasons behind these restrictions.
Notably, the Rostov region governor confirmed that several tankers in the Taganrog Bay sustained minor damage from drone attacks earlier in July. These areas are critical grain-producing hubs for Russia, intensifying concerns about disruptions to the agricultural export infrastructure.
Market Reactions and Sector Implications
The suspension of shipping routes through the Azov-Don Canal and the Kerch Strait has immediate consequences for commodity markets. Following news of the drone strikes and potential shipping interruptions, wheat prices on the Euronext exchange surged by over 4% within a single trading day, reaching a six-week high on July 10.
Given that the Azov-Black Sea basin serves as a crucial corridor for Russian grain transport, uncertainties surrounding maritime access are likely to influence export volumes and global grain supply projections.
Russian ministries responsible for agriculture and transportation have declined to comment on the situation, leaving market participants to grapple with evolving logistical constraints amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Industry watchers emphasize monitoring the situation closely as the blockade of these waterways could trigger broader sector rotations, impact shipping volumes, and contribute to volatility in agricultural commodity markets.
