EU and US Condemn Israel Over Detained Activists Video Amid Gaza Flotilla Tensions
Western nations sharply criticize Israel following minister's video of restrained pro-Palestinian activists, prompting diplomatic responses.

Israel has come under intense international scrutiny after the release of a controversial video showing detained pro-Palestinian activists from the "Sumud" flotilla. The footage, posted by Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir on social media platform X, depicts activists with hands bound behind their backs and heads bowed, kneeling in Ashdod port following their interception by Israeli naval forces.
In the video, Ben-Gvir is seen walking among the activists waving an Israeli flag and shouting in Hebrew, "Welcome to Israel, we are the masters here." The post’s caption describes the detainees as "supporters of terrorism." This display has sparked sharp condemnation from the European Union, the United States, and several Western countries, many of which summoned Israeli ambassadors in protest on May 20.
Diplomatic Fallout and Official Reactions
Italy, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal formally summoned Israeli ambassadors, while Spain called in the chargé d’affaires due to the absence of an Israeli ambassador in Madrid. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski strongly criticized Israel's treatment of detained activists, noting that some detainees were Polish citizens. Sikorski condemned the harsh treatment and called for justice and accountability, stating, "In a democratic world, detainees should not be subjected to cruel treatment and humiliation."
The European Union described Israel’s handling of the activists as "completely unacceptable," emphasizing that detainees must be treated with safety and dignity in strict compliance with international law. EU External Action Service spokesperson Anuar El-Anuni urged Israel to release the detainees promptly. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, labeled the treatment as "humiliating and unacceptable," criticizing Ben-Gvir’s conduct as unworthy of any democratic official.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Hakaoui called the flotilla activists' attempt to reach Gaza "a foolish stunt," but also condemned Ben-Gvir’s behavior as having "betrayed the dignity of his nation." German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the minister’s actions "absolutely unacceptable" and inconsistent with shared German-Israeli values, a sentiment echoed by Germany’s ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert.
"Ben-Gvir’s shameful display has undermined the extensive professional efforts of soldiers and diplomats alike," stated Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, publicly reprimanding the minister on social media.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel's right to prevent what he termed "provocative flotillas" from entering its territorial waters en route to Gaza but acknowledged that Ben-Gvir’s treatment of the activists "does not reflect Israeli values."
Context: The Gaza Blockade and the Sumud Flotilla
The Sumud flotilla departed from Marmaris, Turkey, on May 14 and was intercepted by Israeli naval forces on May 18 approximately 250 nautical miles from Gaza’s coast. Organizers say 428 activists from over 40 countries were detained. This incident is the latest in a series of attempts over the past year to breach Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza, with a previous flotilla involving Greta Thunberg halted in October 2025.
Israeli authorities have reiterated their commitment to preventing these maritime breaches, viewing such flotillas as indirect support to Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by both the EU and the US.
The international backlash to the video reflects growing global concern over human rights and diplomatic norms in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Market observers may monitor potential impacts on geopolitical risk sentiment and regional trade dynamics amid escalating diplomatic tensions.
