Oil prices experienced a sharp spike on April 29 as U.S. President Donald Trump's warnings against Iran intensified market fears. Brent crude for June delivery jumped 7.1% to $119.19 per barrel, briefly touching $119.76, levels last seen in the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine war, according to market reports.

Similarly, the benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose about 7.6%, surpassing $107 per barrel. The surge reflects growing geopolitical risks that threaten to tighten global oil supplies further.

Trump's Iran Strategy and Market Impact

Trump declared opposition to reopening the Strait of Hormuz until Iran agrees to a nuclear deal, signaling a potential prolonged blockade. The Strait, a critical chokepoint through which about 20% of global oil passes, has effectively faced disruptions due to escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities.

“Trump favors a long-term blockade over riskier military actions, aiming to pressure Iran by hindering its oil exports,” market analysts noted.

According to U.S. defense officials, the conflict with Iran has already cost the United States approximately $25 billion, primarily in munitions expenses. Pentagon leadership offered varying estimates but acknowledged substantial financial commitment amid ongoing operations.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump instructed aides to prepare for an extended economic and naval blockade designed to restrict Iranian oil shipments by preventing vessel access to Iranian ports. This approach is viewed by the administration as less risky than full military engagement or withdrawal.

Since February 28, the U.S. and Israel have conducted strikes resulting in the deaths of key Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's close associates. In retaliation, Iran targeted American military installations in neighboring countries and disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, escalating global energy security concerns.

Attempts at diplomacy have included direct U.S.-Iran talks in Pakistan on April 11, shortly after a ceasefire was declared. However, discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, and the U.S. rapidly moved to assert naval control over the Strait. Tehran accused Washington of violating the ceasefire, further fueling tensions.

Market participants are now closely monitoring developments, as risks of prolonged supply interruptions and heightened geopolitical instability continue to drive volatility and volume in energy markets.
